Renders of the First Class Enquiry and Purser’s Office aboard the Titanic. This area is currently being placed in-game, and it will serve as an important area in Titanic: Honor and Glory’s story.

Images 1-2: Enquiry Office. The Enquiry Office was located on C Deck adjacent to the First Class Entrance or “Grand Staircase”. Like the reception desk at a large hotel would, it is through this office that first class passengers conducted much of their onboard business, including the submission of various requests, the purchase of postage stamps and train tickets, hiring of motorcars at ports of call, and the sending and receiving of telegrams. There was a post box for passengers to drop letters in, and just outside the office were three queue dividers and a brochure rack.

Image 3: Telegram tube. The brass object in the corner of the wall was a pneumatic tube that ran between the Enquiry Office on C Deck and the Marconi Office on the Boat Deck. It was much like the pneumatic tubes you see at modern banks, except it was used to send telegrams between the two offices. A first class passenger could fill in a telegram form at the front desk (paying by the letter), and the staff would put it into the tube, sending it quickly to the Marconi Office. There, a wireless operator would transmit the message in Morse Code to wherever it was supposed to go. For incoming messages for passengers, the wireless operator would receive the message in Morse Code, jot it down on a telegram, and put that into the tube, sending it to the Enquiry Office. From there, the telegram would be delivered to the recipient.

Image 4: Safe. In the Enquiry Office was also a large safe, likely manufactured by Ratner. If first class passengers had money or other valuables they did not wish to keep in their staterooms or carry with them, they could check them into the Enquiry Office to be locked in the safe during the voyage.

Images 5-6: Purser’s Office. Adjacent to the Enquiry Office was the Purser’s Office. Both offices operated essentially as one, with the Enquiry Office acting as an extension of the Purser’s Office. The Chief Purser was in charge of the ship’s general administration, and was essentially the onboard business manager, accountant, and chief clerk. Along with his assistants, he handled the filling in of freight and passenger manifests and other bookkeeping matters. The Chief Purser’s other responsibilities included the answering of passengers’ questions and concerns, the resolution of any problems they may have, and the prompt and satisfactory fulfillment of any passengers’ unusual requests. The Chief Purser had to be familiar with the entire ship and everyone on it, and as a result of his duties was probably the second most well-known person on the ship, after the Captain. The Chief Purser aboard the Titanic was Hugh R.W. McElroy.

Various tanks of the Great War, introduced in 1916 and used until 1918.

The development of tanks in World War I was a response to the stalemate that trench warfare had created on the western front. Although initially termed “land ships” production vehicles were named “tanks”, to preserve secrecy. The term was chosen when it became known that the factory workers at William Foster referred to the first prototype as “the tank” because of its resemblance to a steel water tank.

While the British took the lead in tank development, the French were not far behind, fielding their first tanks in April, 1917 and going on to produce more tanks than all the other combatants combined. The Germans, on the other hand, were slower to develop tanks, concentrating on anti-tank weapons to use against British and French tanks, and producing only 20 of their own A7V.

The first tanks were highly mechanically unreliable. There were problems that caused considerable attrition rates during combat deployment and transit. The heavily shelled terrain was impassable to conventional vehicles, and only highly mobile tanks such as the Mark and FTs performed reasonably well.

“Pretty much since the beginning of time, people have looked for ways to control their own fertility—from jumping backward seven times after sex, to using elephant or crocodile dung as suppositories, to drinking mercury and donning reusable condoms. And for just as long, there’s been a veritable crusade against (mostly) women’s efforts to control reproduction. From the book of Genesis to the 21st Olympiad, here are some noteable moments in the war on contraception.”

His skill secured him a position as an assistant for the German metalwork exhibition at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair.

Curious History: The Doll’s House of Petronella Oortman, 1686-1705

Step into the doll house and find out how the rich lived in the 17th century. The doll’s house belonging to the rich merchant’s wife, Petronella Oortman, quickly gained fame as a world wonder. The doll’s house is fully furnished and every piece is made exactly to scale. It provides a unique view of the interior of an aristocratic family’s home.

In the 17th century, a doll’s house was not a child’s plaything, but a pastime for adult women, comparable to the art collection of a gentleman. This is one of three 17th century doll’s houses that have survived intact. Petronella ordered miniature porcelain objects from China and commissioned furniture makers and artists to decorate the interior. It was extremely costly to create a model house like this. Petronella probably spent between twenty and thirty thousand guilders on her doll’s house. In the 17th century, she would have been able to buy a real house along one of the canals for that price.

Mail Call Letterpack - You get two players that play only the cartridges you can buy from Smith Corona and you can send a 3, 6 or 10 minutes letter. Just $70 a pair in 1967, these would be $450 in today’s dollars. How is this better than a phone? They say, it has no static and it’s cheaper!
